2-year insurance claims limits

As we approach the two-year mark following the wildfire, residents are reminded that:

  • Alberta's Insurance Act (section 526) stipulates a statutory limit of two-years post-event for the initiation of legal action against an insurer.
  • Insurers are required to notify policyholders in writing about this statutory limitation period.
  • If you have an open claim, you are encouraged to contact your insurer in writing to request a voluntary extension of the deadline.
  • If you intend to dispute your claim, a Statement of Claim must be filed with the Courts before the two-year limit date to protect your legal rights.
  • In past wildfire recoveries, the Alberta Superintendent of Insurance has issued formal notice outlining the expectation that insurers consider extension requests in good faith. At the JRCC’s request, similar notice and guidance for Jasper residents and insurers is expected in mid March.

If you have questions about your specific claim, please contact your insurance provider directly.

Notice to the public: Public hearing on proposed 2026 Off-Site Levies Bylaw

The Municipality of Jasper will hold a Public Hearing to receive feedback on the proposed 2026 Off-Site Levies Bylaw during a special meeting of Town Council:

Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2026
Time: 1:30 PM
Location: Jasper Library & Cultural Centre (Downstairs), 500 Robson Street, Jasper, AB

Under the Alberta Municipal Government Act, municipalities are authorized to impose off-site levies. These levies are fees collected from developers to help fund the infrastructure required to support new development. They ensure that net new development contributes toward essential services such as roads, water, and wastewater systems.

The proposed bylaw outlines:
• Infrastructure projects eligible for levy funding
• Levy rates applicable to net new development and redevelopment
• The methodology used to calculate levy amounts
• Timing of levy payments relative to development approvals

The intent of this bylaw is to ensure that growth in Jasper remains fiscally responsible, with appropriate infrastructure in place to support future needs while maintaining a fair balance between public and private investment.

The Public Hearing provides an opportunity for residents, leaseholders, developers, and other interested parties to present comments, ask questions, or share concerns directly with Council before a final decision is made.

A copy of the draft bylaw and supporting materials is available online, or upon request.

Understanding residential foundation construction- BILD Alberta

BILD Alberta has created a resource document about foundation construction. The document outlines key information about residential foundation construction as part of the Jasper Rebuild. It explains common foundation methods, inspection and Alberta Building Code requirements, and the structural warranty coverage in place, to help homeowners understand how foundations are built to meet required standards.
